    ABOUT THE AREA
    View of Dingwall from Knockfarrel

Being in such a central position in the Highlands, Fodderty Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore in every direction.

    • Ullapool and the West Coast can be reached by car within an hour. Dornoch with its fabulous Royal golf course and beach take 45 minutes.
    • Skye in just over an hour
    • Inverness, the capital of the Highlands (20 minutes). The Black Isle is literally on our door step.
    • Loch Ness and Glen Affric, one of Scotland's oldest Caledonian forests (40 minutes)
    • Culloden Battlefield and Fort George (35 minutes)
    • Aviemore and the Cairngorms (55 minutes)
    • Many of our guests even organise a day trip to the Orkney Islands during their stay

For "serious walkers", we are at the foot of the Ben Wyvis range and there are several Monros within reach. There is a lot for cyclists too, with marked trails and forest routes, and a nearby cycle hire shop. From the house, a 45-minute ridge-ramble up to the top of Knockfarrel (seen below) gives wonderful views of sunsets to the West and sunrises to the East: a satisfying walk without having to get into your car! Extend it by another 40 minutes and you can be in Strathpeffer for lunch or supper!

Fodderty Lodge is part of the Walkers and Cyclists welcome scheme. Dolphin watching in the Cromarty Firth is a popular attraction and we are also in the heart of bird watching heaven with red kites and buzzards seen daily from the house.
